Description

“North Shore” is a landmark water front home on Sutton’s iconic Burrow Road. This dream beach house is detached on half an acre with c.5,600 square feet (520 sq m) of luxurious accommodation and fabulous sea views sweeping Burrow beach. Architecturally inspired by the seaside homes of North America, many of its fine features are associated with that style. These elements were produced by specialist Canadian craftsmen and include coffered timber and Victorian pressed tin ceilings, a deep veranda, colonial style joinery and expanses of rich American hardwood. Inside, a bright porch leads to a stunning, 50 ft long hall featuring angular bays and a winding walnut staircase. The house has two elegant reception rooms, both with dual aspect, one perfect for daytime and another at its best in the evening. There is also a snug tv room, which could serve equally well as a discreet adult work space. The main event is an impressive double height kitchen space facing the sea, with a glamorous mezzanine above. From the sofas on the mezzanine one has elevated views over the estuary, the islands and all along the coast terminating with the triangular silhouette of the mountains of Mourne in Ulster. The octagonal kitchen plan is laid out with pleasing symmetry, flanked by cute, twin, utility spaces, one a coffee station and the other a laundry, with garden access. The first floor bedrooms are all large doubles, most are dual aspect, two with sea views and all 4 have well-appointed en-suites and built in wardrobes. The master suite dominates the quiet, retreat of the second floor, with a seriously expansive bedroom , spectacular views , a freestanding copper bath and a dressing room leading to a swish, oversized en-suite. Light fills the house from all angles and throughout the day thanks to the abundant windows. The neutral earthly palette is contrasted by deep walnut panelling, flooring and staircase furniture, giving both traditional and sleek contemporary appeal. Beyond the traditional, the cutting edge ‘home spa’ style bathrooms are about heated limestone, Aqua tv’s, steam cabins and luxury fittings. Added comfort comes with several chic bespoke window seats, while fine stone fireplaces and a customized oak bookcase complete the drawing room scheme. Outside the garden is a well-stocked collection of mature, coastal plants. The front is sheltered and blooms with small ornamental cherry trees in spring. The seaward side is terraced to offer an unobstructed view from the upper level and a more secluded, lower lawn with a secret hobbit gateway to the dunes. Beyond, the vast expanse of Burrow beach awaits, protected as part of the Dublin Bay UNESCO biosphere, wonderful natural sights from exquisite native orchids to playful seals are common place. Burrow is a superbly picturesque suburban beach with dreamy, intimate views of Ireland’s Eye and Lambay Island. There is plenty of maritime activity to enhance the view, which changes seasonally, the flashing white of summer yacht races and the year long chug of the fishing trawlers into the haven of Howth harbour. Even on cold blustery days one can enjoy the polychromatic zig zag of the many kite surfers. Heading East from the house a perfect inter-tidal shoreline stroll will bring you right into Howth village, while turning west on the beach takes you to a narrow channel, much favoured by anglers and the tip of Portmarnock strand beyond. The Howth peninsula is a very special corner of Dublin, though only 12 km from the city centre and a mere 10 km from Dublin Airport. The peninsula is cherished for its breath-taking vistas and beautiful, protected landscapes. The opportunities for outdoor pursuits are endless, as well as water activities, there are many scenic routes and walking trails which criss cross the spectacular upland heath and rugged coastline. The rich cultural heritage centres around the historic fishing village of Howth, which in addition to its numerous, venerable hostelries, nowadays also caters to every culinary whim. Children’s educational needs are well catered for with 3 junior and 2 senior national schools on the peninsula in addition to the private Sutton Park International primary & secondary school, located within 3km of home. North Shore is a home for both snuggling down in the gorgeous, comfortable interiors and watching nature’s progress from multiple vantage points, or venturing out into the unspoiled, natural environment at the bottom of the garden. Even for the Peninsula, the location of this house is a particularly enviable one, set on a lovely residential road between a golden strand and a pristine golf links, only minutes from the practical amenities of Sutton Cross and the considerable, cosy charms of Howth Village. North Shore is a proposition in year round good living, it may well be as good as it gets.
