He also added decorative grape and vine timber carvings in bog oak to door architraves. Comprehensive upgrading works in circa 2000 included the addition of a bold contemporary cedar clad upper floor, which is entirely glazed on the sea front side in design like the Bridge of a Ship. The effect is simply remarkable, allowing glorious natural light inside and seemingly magnifying the panoramic views. This upper level comprises some 1,000 square feet (95 square metres) of light filled living space and includes the fitted kitchen. Incorporating reclaimed pitch-pine flooring boards, beautifully coloured historic brick and a solid-fuel stove the old seamlessly blends with the new large modern sloped glass windows and toughed glass floor panels, which transfers great natural light to the central lobby hall library below. A large wood stove makes this a cosy space. The living room faces south and east and has an open fireplace. An enclosed porch links to the garden and is used as a very pleasant studio. The original casement windows have been retained but with efficient modern glazing discreetly added. There are three bedrooms on the lower level, two with en-suite bathrooms and one has double French doors that open to a small private terrace with excellent framed views. A fourth bedroom suite is positioned mid-way between the floors on a mezzanine level off the stair return. The accommodation on the lower floor is completed by a family bathroom, storeroom and a large laundry room, which opens to an outside courtyard. A sympathetically styled guest chalet is a short distance from the house, across the sun-trapping south and west facing terrace. It is currently utilised as a luxurious home office but is laid out to allow self-contained living with a bedroom, shower room and living room with a kitchenette.
