Due to disastrous weather conditions many of the Spanish ships sank off the west coast of Ireland, including County Clare. Several hundred men were lost, and many of their bodies were washed up at Spanish Point and were buried locally. In 1750 barrister Thomas Morony of Miltown Malbay and Kilmacduane leased lands around Miltown Malbay from the Earl of Thomond. In 1810 his grandson, also Thomas, constructed houses for his family, as well as donating land to friends to build summer residences. Sea View House, now Spanish Point House, was built in 1830 for Francis Gould Morony. The main residence was constructed at that time and two wings were added forty years later, in 1870.
