Abbeyshrule is a special place, an ancient, picturesque village located along the banks of the Royal Canal in South County Longford. The village was a winner of the National Tidy Towns Award for 2012, and has won gold medals in the competition every year since 2009. It was also a gold medal winner of the European Entente Floral Competition for 2012.
The village takes its name from the Irish language word for a river or stream (sruth) and from the early medieval Cistercian abbey, the ruins of which still survives on the banks of the Inny (which is renowned for kayaking). The royal canal also passes though the village with it’s own harbour, slipway and amenity area, beside which is the famous Rustic Inn Bar, Restaurant and Guesthouse.
Abbeyshrule is situated off the N55 Athlone – Cavan road and is c. 19km south east of Longford Town and c. 25km west of Mullingar. Ballymahon is less than 9 km away and the newly developed centre parcs holiday resort is also conveniently nearby.
This village is a popular residential location with lots of natural amenities. The airfield is one of the few in the midlands and is the base for flying lessons. There is also a recently announced enterprise hub being developed in the village. There are number national schools in area and two, very well renowned, secondary schools in nearby Ballymahon.
