This stream bisects the gardens and is bounded on both sides by incredibly tall and mature alder and ash trees with clumps of persicaria, lime-green euphorbia, candelabra primroses, purple irises, campions and fritillaria meleagris in spring and summer. There are electric outdoor lights attached to the underside of the bridge and along the margins of the stream, operated by remote control which offer delightful lighting effects in the evenings. The four corners of the bridge are topped by electric candle-style lanterns which are in keeping with the character of Brook House. A wide semi-circle of granite steps down to a paved little al fresco dining area, hewn in a semi-circular design, is set into the riverbank which offers a glorious optional seating area in which to absorb the views while enjoying a glass of wine or a cup of tea in what is truly a sub-lime setting while further downstream - but still within the gardens - is the railed decking walk-way trail which leads to its own secluded little river bathing area which is defined by a sturdy bench with even more glorious views. The handcrafted elevated tree house is accessed via an elevated walkway railed on either side by rustic branches taken from trees of the gardens. Above its entrance is a latticed arch of branches beneath which is an Arts & Crafts lantern. On entering the treehouse past its solid hardwood door, one enters a room with two hardwood windows and glazed sliding doors lead-ing to the savannah-style terrace which has period lanterns set into the outer walls. The floor of this room is pierced by the trunk of a tree which emerges onto the terrace. The terrace which is directly suspended above the river, has outstanding views of the river and the wood-land on either sides of the Avonbeg. There is a flight of steps from the main entrance leading up to a little room upstairs which is the very definition of the word ‘snug’ with a window that has commanding views over the entirety of one side of the extensive gardens. The second or savannah treehouse is in the long grassland of the wilder side of the gardens with an open aspect. It is accessed by an external wooden staircase leading to a square ‘look-out’ area in the middle of which sits the trunk of a huge eucalyptus tree which forms the base of the treehouse. From here there are lovely views towards the river, the cottage and the gar-dens from its solid wooden railings. Brook House itself is in spectacular condition throughout, has many individual features and is on a secluded and private gated site with the option to purchase a further C.4 acres of adjoining riverside meadow. Directions

From Dublin take the N11/M11 Motorway South. Exit at exit 16 and head for R752 for Rathdrum. Stay on the R752 for about 15 km until reaching the village of Rathdrum.
