Bleach House was built in 1815 as a manager's residence for the Villiers-Stuart family who lived nearby at Dromana House, and was part of the linen industry in the area at that time. Villierstown was founded by the Villiers-Stuart family, from where the name is derived on the River Blackwater. In the 1740s the 1st Earl Grandison; John Villiers, established the village to develop a linen industry. The village was initially populated with linen-weavers and was a great source of employment at the time.

A kayaking and canoe club are found on the quay at Villierstown.

On entering Villierstown from the Cappoquin direction you are greeted by the well known and loved Hindu Gothic Gate Lodge over the River Finisk which was built originally for the Dromana Estate and is one of a kind in Ireland.
Camphire International Horse Trials are held across the river from Bleach House every year. Susan Dobbs the original owner and Van Der Vater founded the horse trials in 2000.
