Fintown itself is a quaint village located on the banks of Lough Finn between Letterkenny and Glenties. The village is situated in the centre of Donegal and is surrounded by rugged mountains, deep glens and numerous lakes – every turn on the road in this beautiful area can unfold a new and stunning landscape.
Lough Finn is a breathtaking 3 miles long lake and is a half mile wide at its widest point. The lake lies under the shadow Aghla Mountain (589m, 1961 ft) and Screig Mountain and the sight of these tree clad mountains reflected on the lake is one of the most impressive inland views in Donegal.
The River Finn which meanders through the area is recognised as one of the finest salmon rivers in Ireland and attracts anglers from far and wide. Permits for the excellent fly fishing in the Fintown area can be obtained from the Railway Inn which is within walking distance of the holiday cottage.
The Fintown Railway is a restored section of the former County Donegal Railway and is the only working railway in County Donegal. Set amidst dramatic highland scenery this narrow gauge railway runs for 5km along the shores of Lough Finn. This setting prompted the renowned international playwright Brian Friel to announce “What is on offer is a unique journey along the shores of a lake as grand as any in Switzerland or Minnesota”
