The area lies roughly in the centre of county Donegal, just 4 miles west of letterkenny on the eastern side of the Glenveigh National Park, with the Derryveagh Mountains just visible in the west behind the hill. There are four interconnected lakes in the immediate vicinity, they are Lough Akibbon, Lough Nacally, Lough Claggan, and the largest one which is Gartan Lough. There is also a much smaller one called Lough Beg.

This centre houses a unique interpretative exhibition featuring the life and times of Saint Colmcille Columba - Patriarch of the Irish monastic system and founder of the Scottish Church.
