Ballyconneely is situated in the heart of Connemara, which is the most westerly part of Europe and is an area unspoiled beauty and tranquillity. There are truly amazing blue flag beaches for swimming and snorkelling, incredible river fishing and bril-liant restaurants. Ballyconneely village is located between Clifden town and the seaside village of Roundstone. Ballyconneely is a busy little village complete with a bar, shops, a café, church, school and the Connemara Sands Hotel, perfect for a delicious meal. There is also a newly developed community park and playground. The world-renowned Connemara Golf Links and Course is a short drive from Carrie’s Cottage and there are many white sandy beaches including Mannin, the famous Coral Strand and Ail-lebrack beach. Aillebrack Pier is home to the Connemara Smokehouse which is the oldest smokehouse in Connemara and one of the oldest in Western Ireland specialis-ing in smoking wild Atlantic Salmon. Clifden Town is the acclaimed capital of Connemara and is 15-minute drive from Carrie’s Cottage. Clifden is synonymous with its annual Art’s Festival which is held every September and the colourful town spoils it’s visitors with its choice in bars, restaurants, shops, art galleries and more! Clifden is host to many amenities includ-ing both a primary and secondary school, doctors surgeries, nursing home, grocery stores and hospital. The stunning seaside village of Roundstone is a 10 minute drive from Carrie’s Cot-tage, which is hugely popular with renowned among artists and naturalists for the remarkable beauty of the surrounding mountains and seascapes. It has a traditional craft centre and local activities include Connemara Pottery, Connemara Jewellery and Connemara Instrument making. Connemara Farming, Connemara Fishing, Con-nemara Forestry and Connemara Quarrying are carried out extensively in the area. There is also a busy harbour and many lovely bars, restaurants, cafes and shops to enjoy a drink or peruse local crafts. The Connemara National Park located 25 minutes from Carrie’s Cottage in Letter-frack provides a selection of lovely walks from wooded to mountainside, including one to the top of Diamond Hill. Staff at the park run activities for children during the summer months and the information centre gives a good history of the area. Kylemore Abbey and Gardens is also just a 5-minute drive from the Letterfrack. The Abbey is currently host to students from the famous Notre Dame University, but the spectacular and historic building on the edge of Kylemore Lake is open to the pub-lic and the grounds provide lovely lakeside walks. There is an extensive shop and coffee shop catering to tourists. The old walled Victorian gardens, which have been restored and refurbished, display a great variety of plants and trees and bring one back to another era. Other things to do and see in the area: • Ballinahinch Castle Hotel for fine food and beautiful woodland and riverside walks open throughout the grounds (20 minutes drive) • Many lovely beaches within a 5 to 15 minute drive • Killary Harbour and marvellous Leenane village with its bars, restaurants and shops is 40 minutes away • Little Killary adventure centre – (50 minutes drive) - providing a huge range of outdoor activities for children and adults.
