Features

Features: LOCATION: Its central location on Priests Road is a major attraction of Brelade. It is within safe and easy walking distance of shops, including a major supermarket, pharmacy and post office, as well as the schools, library, cafes, specialist stores and pubs. Proximity to the Holy Cross Catholic Church is also a decided advantage for some people. Tramore’s amenities-the beach, the Doneraile, the Pier, Newtown Cove, the Lafcadio Hearn Japanese Gardens, not to mention sporting facilities like the tennis club, are all easily accessible on foot or by bicycle. A resident of Brelade, with some strategic planning, could considerably reduce their carbon footprint, given the number of daily activities it is possible to undertake without ever using a car. FRONT GARDEN: The house is well set back from the road and the front garden offers seasonal colour in its planting, as well as privacy. The small grassed area here is easily maintained and a gentle slope to one side allows for the easy moving of waste disposal bins via the path from the yard to the right of the house. YARD: The yard is a secluded and sheltered place to sit, with two of its random rubble stone walls. The same stone was also used to build the slate-roofed outhouse, ideal for storing coal, wood or turf for the winter, as well as the mower and gardening implements. BACK GARDEN: Although there no longer is a garage, there is parking space for two cars immediately behind the yard wall, with access via the right of way which goes to the left of the neighbouring house and around to the back. The chief attributes of the large back garden are its truly organic nature: the absence of chemicals since at least 1962; the existence of fruit-bearing apple trees which are c150 years old; the fact that so many of the trees, shrubs and flowers date from previous owners, and that so many more plants originated as cuttings from the gardens of other family members and friends, and then went on to self-seed and spread. Drifts of snowdrops at the end of winter, are followed by daffodils in various shades of yellow, then bluebells, fritillaries and aquilegias in shades of purple, pink, red and blue, moving on to golden rod in summer-and so it goes across the seasons. All of this combines to create a natural and flourishing environment for birds, bees and insects, and delights all of our senses. In more recent years, potatoes, peas and rhubarb have been grown successfully and the garden has great potential for those who are committed to producing their own fruit and vegetables. The back garden of Brelade is a wonderful place for children to play, explore and exercise their imagination, as well as providing a haven of peace and tranquillity to be enjoyed. It can truly be described as a “rus in urbe”- a place creating the illusion of being in the countryside when still in town.
