Situation & Amenities

Clonbur: This quiet village, near Cong and the Mayo border, is an ideal centre for the trout angler as it nestles easily between the two great lakes of Corrib and Mask. For the more adventurous, Mount Gable lies just 2 km to the West, and is an easy climb of about one hour’s duration. The effort is worthwhile because the views of Lough Corrib stretching away to the south, Lough Mask to the north and the Connemara mountains to the west are simply breathtaking. Petersburgh Estate: This ruin marks a seat of the Lynch family, one of whose members, John Lynch, was a signatory of The American Declaration of Independence. The estate has been developed as an adventure centre run by the Vocational Education Authority. Ballykyne Castle: One of a series of five fortifications, it was originally owned by the O’Kynes but eventually passed from one Sir Richard O’Donnell to Sir Benjamin Guinness, and thus became part of the great Guinness estates. Architecturally, this castle has some interesting doorways. One enters this castle by entering the demesne via the Red Gate which is 1.5km east of Clonbur village. Cong : Cong is is legendary for the scene of ‘Quiet Man Movie’ and home of Ashford Castle Hotel. Cong built on an island, it is a quaint village fishing village that attracts a lot of tourists each year. Cong is centrally located to major urban areas such as Galway city, Castlebar and Westport.
