It was built on the site of a shrine to a Madonna and is said to have healing powers and attracts over a million visitors per year. The village is situated on the cliff side and the streets are lined with medieval houses and there are picturesque views of the River Alzou below. Also worth a visit is La Forêt des Singes which is a monkey forest, or watch the birds of prey shows in Le Rocher des Aigles.
The small town of Gramat is 22km away and has an animal park which houses a diverse range of animals and protected plant species and is open all year round. The Gouffre de Padirac is 12km away where you can take a boat trip underground and see some of the most interesting geological sites in France. For train enthusiasts there is a steam train in Martel, 17km away, which in summer does daily rides through the beautiful Lot countryside. The valley of the River Dordogne extends to the east and west and there are opportunities for river activities including canoeing, kayaking and swimming to name a few. There are a number of villages in France which are members of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France and are rich in cultural heritage. These include Carennac, 3km, Loubressac, 10km, and Autoire, 14km, which is a village set against a backdrop of cliffs forming the Cirque d’Autoire with waterfalls and breathtaking views. In addition to the region’s historical and geographical wealth it also has plenty to offer gastronomically with a plethora of restaurants offering local delights.
