Between 1937 and 1939 there were over 100 Catalan women and children, housed at the Chateau.During the 2nd World War elements of the reconnaissance regiment of the 9th German tank division fought in the vicinity and the Chateau remained in the occupied section of France until the area was liberated by the French resistance movement in late 1944. Sancerre is a natural fortress 312 meters in height and was a former feudal possession of the Counts of Champagne (1152) in the province of Berry.
