ABOUT THE AREA

Port Elizabeth is located on the east coast of South Africa, in the Nelson Mandela Bay municipality. Port Elizabeth (PE for short) fringes Algoa Bay at the western end of the Sunshine Coast, and offers many good bathing beaches, great surf spots and excellent water sports. Marine life in the bay is also sensational, with plenty of dolphins and whales that can be spotted throughout the year. The city centre, once a place to avoid, has started to smarten up thanks to a few urban regeneration projects, and it boasts numerous heritage buildings that are well worth a gander.

PE is also a convenient gateway to destinations in either direction along the coast, as well as to the eastern Karoo.

PE is known for its beautiful beaches, coastal scenery and bio-diversity. Game and ocean safaris (the big seven), shark diving, surfing and golf are but a few of the attractions. PE is midway between Capetown and Durban and is the gateway to some of SA's most spectacular attractions. Less than an hour to the north-east is the renowned Addo elephant park and the exclusive Shamwari game reserve and many other game lodges attracting hundreds of international visitors annually. An hour to the west along the Garden route, are the coastal resort towns of St Francis Bay and Cape St Francis, known for world class surfing spots. An hour further along are the two well known holiday areas of Knysna and Plettenberg Bay visited annually by international tourist.
