I just can’t put my finger on it. There is just something about it, something wondrous but also quite infuriating. It’s the type of place that when you are leaving you keep looking back over your shoulder as if you’ve missed something. What is it?
Modern? Yes got that, yet charming! Roomy yes, but ooh so cosy! Elegant certainly but has a familiar informality. Stylish- that’s a given but so practical. I’m giving up, maybe it’s just one of those conundrum thingies. Come to think of it, it’s bound to be a bit different when its environs are the Hollow, the Long Womans Grave and the Magic Hill. Whatever about Mr Keats being here or not, our very own Paddy Kavanagh certainly wasn’t. When you think of how he described ‘Inniskeen’ on whatever kind of an evening it was, what would he have said of this place—he’d still be writing. This is of course part of ‘an area of outstanding beauty’ and that’s official.
This beautifully designed three/four bedroomed home was built in 2001 some four million years after the Cooley mountains which hang over it. Having come through the secured electronic gates a very spacious hallway greets you on entering the house off which a winding staircase meanders upwards to the two dormer bedrooms. It gets really dark here in the dead of night, much much much darker than in Dundalk for example and that, apparently, coupled with the natural pine fragrance drifting from the mountain forest is the recipe for the very best sleeping patterns known anywhere in the world! The design works really well as it utilises floor area ever so efficiently and ample storage spaces are nicely concealed.
The living room seems just massive and the inlaid gas fire is the coolest thing you ever saw. I don’t know if it’s the huge bay rationel window or the really high ceiling which gives the feeling of such space but it’s just deadly. And you want to see the kitchen. Architecture and Art meet right here to make a beautiful and timeless object. Italian you know..Mmmnn—spaghetti bolognese! The utility is very generous space wise and units match the kitchen. No expense spared!
The Old Road offers a different living experience with its three quarter acre site of nicely maturing gardens featuring young trees and plants. It’s hard to believe that Dublin airport is just fifty minutes away as is Belfast city. The general area is fast becoming a tourist magnet with Carlingford now a destination of choice for many stay at home ‘travellers’.
The seaside is across the road. For hill walking, mountain biking or sheep gazing turn left outside the front gate. Golfing, horse-riding, leisure complex or dining in the Michelin guide entrant ‘Fitzpatricks’ turn right.
Or you can stay where you are!
