Tower Hill Castle, Tower Hill, Glounthaune, Co. Cork

- 5 Bed Detached House 611 m² / 6577 ft² For Sale

Refreshed 2 months ago

Tower Hill Castle is a truly majestic building. The Tower is approached through a stone gate way which hints at the grandeur to be discovered at the top of the hill. When traveling up the drive which splits and loops around a large flower bed which has been lovingly maintained and landscaped it is difficult to know where to look. To the left there is a breath taking view of the Lee River and Cork city beyond it but the finest view on approach is undoubtedly the tower itself which is in a way ironic as it was originally constructed to be used as a vantage point to enjoy the uniquely beautiful Cork countryside. The foundations for the tower were originally laid in 1843. The purpose of Tower Hill Castle was to commemorate the works of Father Mathew, an Irish Teetotalism reformer who travelled the world curing alcoholism, in some cases pre-emptively with the advent of 'The Pledge'.

One would have to wonder how Father Mathew would feel about the current use of the Towers basement as a wine cellar, although it does lend itself wonderfully to this use with small head height windows and remaining a cool dry space. Above the wine cellar there is a grand dining room with a large fireplace. Each of the different habitable levels of the castle are accessed using a secondary turret which runs adjacent to the main larger turret. Running down through the entirety of the second turret are 100 cherry wood steps built into a spiral staircase which hangs from substantial chains. Directly above the dining room is a comfortable and warm drawing room again with a large fireplace and tall arched windows, above this is a bedroom and then finally at the top there is a roof terrace which offers a 360° view of Cork's verdant countryside, coastline and city.

To the west side of the tower is the contemporary extension which allows this stunning building to be used practically as a comfortable and luxurious family home. The contemporary wing comprises 4 bedrooms, 4 reception rooms, 3 balconies, a large terrace, a utility room and a large 2 car garage. The way in which the Castle has been linked to the contemporary extension means that it can be closed off from the extension during quieter times leaving the home owner with a comfortable, luxurious and manageable home. This property was originally built to take full advantage of the views of the surrounding areas and there is no doubt that GR Pain, the original architect, would have been dumbfounded by the properties current status marrying the old with the new and in no little way improving on what was already an architectural masterpiece.

It is extremely rare to find a property with such historical significance which can also offer all modern conveniences and luxuries, but without question Tower Hill Castle exemplifies the marriage of these somewhat contradictory qualities.
