In all about 0.76 hectares (1.87 acres) FOR SALE FREEHOLD BY PRIVATE TREATY BALLYCLOGH HOUSE Ballyclogh House is a character country property set in a peaceful rural position a short distance from Fermoy. This historic house has a colourful past and was originally a substantial Gothic mansion of seven bays, the earliest parts of which were believed to date from the early 17th century. By the 19th century it boasted some forty rooms and was described by Lewis in his Topographical Dictionary of Ireland of 1837 as ‘a handsome mansion in the Elizabethan style’. Of the original, only the northern section now remains, which includes the impressive Tudor style staircase and ballroom – the remainder having been demolished in the 1928 by the Land Commission. A further footnote in history was the birth here in 1813 of barrister Sir Redmond Barry who emigrated to Australia in 1839. He is renowned as the judge who passed sentence on, the most famous of all Australian bush-rangers, Ned Kelly to hang in 1880. In an ironic twist, his own death occurred just 12 days later, from a sudden neck infection which was regarded by many as divine intervention. The remaining portion of the creeper-clad house was restored some 25 years ago and updated and extended in recent years. Located in an idyllic rural setting, surrounded by fields and on a leafy cul de sac, the house extends to some 250 sq meters (2675 sq ft) of accommodation arranged on two floors and includes a wonderful staircase hall, two large reception rooms, 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. The landscaped gardens are a particular feature, surrounding the property on three sides being well planted and tended with a variety of trees and shrubs with a large lawned area to the south running to a small stream. A coaching yard is located to the side with coach house, stables and loft over. The whole extends to c. 2 acres. NORTH CORK Ballyclogh House is well located in a scenic rural area close to Fermoy (10 mins) and within easy reach of Cork city (40 mins), with rapid access via the M8 motorway (6km). Fermoy is well served with a comprehensive range of shopping, financial and leisure facilities. Cork is Ireland’s second city and its international airport serves a wide range of international destinations. The Blackwater Valley area is renowned for its natural beauty with its rich undulating farmland and lush wooded valleys offering an abundance of leisure and sporting amenity. The area provides some of the finest fishing to the Blackwater and its tributaries with golf well catered for locally at Fermoy, and Mitchelstown.
