History of Clonard Clonard lays its roots deep in Irish folklore, history and religion. It is credited to have been a centre of early missionary activities for Palladius, the first bishop of Ireland. After this time, the village originated as an ecclesiastical centre founded by St. Finian in 520AD. According to medieval records, it is believed that St. Finian was led by an angel to Clonard, between the kingdoms of Meath and Leinster, the place of his resurrection. The 19th century church of St Finian, built on a the 6th century monastic site, still stands to this day. As the area was on the boundary of both kingdoms, during a time of war and unsettlement, by the mid-ninth century it became the leading church of the Irish midlands. By the early 10th century, Clonard blossomed into a monastic town, with a round tower, a high cross, a stone church and a library, built by Bishop Colmán Mac Ailella. In c.1177 the Lord of Meath, Hugh De Lacy constructed a motte and bailey fortification and it remains to this day a landmark in the village. Location Clonard is located in the south west of county Meath, 6 km east of Kinnegad and 15 km west of Enfield. The village developed along the former N4 National primary road connecting Dublin to Galway. The banks of the River Boyne rise in the area and the Clonard river to the rear of the property is a tributary of the River Boyne. In Clonard there are two pubs, the Monastery Inn bar and restaurant and Paddy's. There is also a local shop for everyday needs.
