A five minute drive from Aisling House brings you to the Derrygimlagh Bog Walk, which is five kilometre trail through an area of outstanding natural beauty and steeped with history. Pilots John Alcock and Arthur Whitten Brown crashed-landed in the bog in 1919 after completing the world’s first transatlantic flight. They landed close to a wireless telegraphy station which had been set up 14 years earlier by Italian inventor, Guglielmo Marconi. Today the location of the Marconi wireless station is home to a memorial cairn dedicated to the pair. Close by, in the beautiful Errislannan peninsula, there is a monument built for the Alcock and Brown. Just recently a cast bronze statue of the pair has been erected on Clifden town square. Clifden offers a wonderful range of shops and one can also rent bikes from a number of vendors in the town to explore the surrounding area, or the Connemara Greenway, which is undergoing construction at the moment. Currently, there are circa 20 kilometres of the Greenway Completed, which is a beautiful walking/cycling trail that follows the original tracks of the old Clifden to Galway train tracks-a journey our ancestors would have travelled many years ago. The Greenway is a surfaced track which roams through the Connemara countryside and will eventually reach Galway City. Located a 10-minute drive away, you will find Ballyconneely which is a busy little village complete with a bar, shops, a café, church, school and the Connemara Sands Hotel, perfect for a delicious meal. There is also a newly developed community park and playground. The world-renowned Connemara Golf Links and Course is a short drive from the village and there are many white sandy beaches including Mannin, the famous Coral Strand and Aillebrack beach. Aillebrack Pier is home to the Connemara Smokehouse which is the oldest smokehouse in Connemara and one of the oldest in Western Ireland specialising in smoking wild Atlantic Salmon. The stunning seaside village of Roundstone is a 20 minute drive from Aisling House, which is hugely popular with renowned among artists and naturalists for the remarkable beauty of the surrounding mountains and seascapes. It has a traditional craft centre and local activities include Connemara Pottery, Connemara Jewellery and Connemara Instrument making. Connemara Farming, Connemara Fishing, Connemara Forestry and Connemara Quarrying are carried out extensively in the area. There is also a busy harbour and many lovely bars, restaurants, cafes and shops to enjoy a drink or peruse local crafts. The Connemara National Park located 15 minutes from Aisling House in Letterfrack provides a selection of lovely walks from wooded to mountainside, including one to the top of Diamond Hill. Staff at the park run activities for children during the summer months and the information centre gives a good history of the area. Kylemore Abbey and Gardens is also just a 5-minute drive from the Letterfrack. The Abbey is currently host to students from the famous Notre Dame University, but the spectacular and historic building on the edge of Kylemore Lake is open to the public and the grounds provide lovely lakeside walks. There is an extensive shop and coffee shop catering to tourists. The old walled Victorian gardens, which have been restored and refurbished, display a great variety of plants and trees and bring one back to another era. Other things to do and see in the area: • Ballinahinch Castle Hotel for fine food and beautiful woodland and riverside walks open throughout the grounds (10 minutes drive) • Many lovely beaches within a 5 to 15 minute drive • Killary Harbour and marvellous Leenane village with its bars, restaurants and shops is 35 minutes away • Little Killary adventure centre – (30 minutes drive) - providing a huge range of outdoor activities for children and adults.
