Description
Number 1 Martello Terrace is a unique sea side home overlooking Sutton creek on Strand road. This historic cottage is a former 19th century coastguard station and look out tower and retains much of the character of it’s original naval purpose. The building comprises a brick faced cottage, a white washed two storey tower and a modern cedar clad extension. Together they provide both the charm of intimate reception rooms and the contemporary amenity of the large open plan living space. Being a lookout tower it’s position was chosen to offer panoramic views of Dublin bay. A shining seascape from Dollymount strand right around to the miniature islands Of Dalkey and Muglins is background for the leisurely to and fro of ferries and cruise liners. Inside this snug haven the interiors are at once fashionable and nostalgic. Number 1 has a special maritime heritage and a sensitive conservation of original fabric and old structures was observed. An authentic ambience comes from real open fires, Victorian window shutters and original floorboards and doors. As for the new, luxury fittings, marbles and mosaics are mixed with traditional panelling and antique brassware to create properly stylish, indulgent interiors. Cast iron school house radiators and under floor heating keep all areas warm and cosy. The layout too is optimal, with 2 separate entrances, 3 receptions with sofa seating, 3 chic ensuite bathrooms, downstairs loo and discrete laundry space. However the copious built in storage from kitchen to bedrooms is where the ‘Tardis’ quality of this cottage is perhaps most evident, easily accommodating all the stuff that comes with a laid back lifestyle. A generous swathe of green bound by Victorian stone walls wraps around the house with places to sit and watch the bay and room to park 3 vehicles. This prominent corner site just where Strand road turns away from the sea has an ‘end of the line feel’. The cottage faces the entrance to the renowned ‘Cliff Walk’. This 6 mile scenic, Seaside path starts at the neighbouring Martello Tower and goes on to encapsulate most of the coastal vistas of the peninsula, terminating in the picturesque fishing village of Howth. Sutton creek is also a playground for water sports, with frequent colourful displays of wind surfers and mini flotillas from the Dinghy club. Directly across the road are steps down to a pebble beach, with remains of Bottle Quay’s boat house and slip way. Here the men of the coastguard station launched their vessels whether to rescue distressed ships or apprehend smugglers. These days this shoreline is visited by Grey seals whose colony is visible half a mile away. The nearby seaside villages of Howth, Malahide and Clontarf are all prosperous centres with numerous restaurants, shops and good pubs. Dublin city centre is 8 miles away and readily accessible by bus and the suburban DART train. So the location of this lovely ‘lookout’ cottage combines the rugged appeal of the coast with the convenient pleasures of urban living.
