Oughterard is a small town in Co Galway. It is located on the banks of the Owenriff River close to the western shore of Lough Corrib. It is 26km northwest of Galway on the N59 road and is the chief angling centre on the lough. The ruins of Aughnanure Castle lie 3km outside the town while the Quiet Mile Bridge is 8km past Oughterard, down the Leam Road, which was the setting for the 1950s film 'The Quiet Man' starring John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara. Local amenities include a selection of pubs, shops and restaurants while there is also a primary school and secondary school. There are daily buses going from and to Galway and Clifden. Amongst the sports clubs in the area are a GAA club.
