Little Island is an area to the east of Cork City. Despite its name it is no longer an island since the northern channel separating it from the mainland has filled over. To the west and south is Lough Mahon, part of Cork Harbour while across a channel to the east is Fota Island. Little Island, which is around 10 minutes from the city centre, is mainly industrial with many of Cork's pharmaceutical companies based here. The main drainage sewage treatment for Cork City is also located here. There are also retail and commercial developments as well as Cork Golf Club. Little Island railway station has direct rail links to Cork, Cobh, Mallow and Midleton. Townlands of Little Island include Ballytrasna, Carrigrenan, Castleview, Courtstown, Harper's Island, Inchera and Wallingstown.
