Cavan

County Cavan, known as ‘Lake Country’ is a landlocked county located in the province of Ulster. County Cavan is one of three counties situated in the province of Ulster without being part of Northern Ireland. County Cavan is said to have 365 lakes, one for each day of the year. The chief lakes are noted for their scenery and coarse fishing and include the tortuously shaped Lough Oughter, and Loughs Ramor, Sheelin, Sillan, and Brackley. Cavan is home to Lough-an-Leagh Mountain which is considered an area of outstanding natural beauty. On a clear day it is possible to see 14 counties from the summit. Cavan Town is a thriving and attractive town nestled between two drumlins is the county’s principal town and administrative centre. Other well established and significant towns in County Cavan include; Cootehill, Bailieboro, Kingscourt, Belturbet and Virginia – It is said that Jonathan Swift come up with the idea for Gulliver’s Travels after visiting here. From one end of the Lake Country to the other, the towns and villages express Cavan's unique charm, rich heritage and easy pace of life. Avra, Blacklion, Mullaghm, Stradone and Swanlinbar famous for the healing properties of its many spas and natural springs are among the long list of attractive and charming villages in the county. County Cavan has a strong industrial base and is home to some big named companies including Synthetic fibre manufacturer, Wellman International from the US, Pauwels Trafo from Belgium, Gypsum Industries from the UK and Abbott Laboratories from the US. County Cavan also promotes networking and trade in business and tourism between the border towns and counties in conjunction with the Irish Central Border Area Region initiative and Acumen programme. There are many road routes that run through County Cavan. The main routes are; the N3 to Dublin, N54 to Clones and Monaghan, N87 to Enniskillen and the N55 to Athlone. Both Belfast and Dublin city are within two hours driving distance of the county. Bus Eireann operates a service across the county and the nearest airport and seaport to the county is located in Dublin.
