Castletownbere is a small town in west Cork. It is located on the Beara Peninsula by Berehaven Harbour. It is also known as Castletown Berehaven. The area is well known for its fishing port and is one of the five main fishing ports on the island of Ireland. It is also the largest whitefish port in the country and the second safest natural harbour in the world. It is also home to the Irish Fisheries Training School, under the auspices of BIM. Amongst the other local attractions included Dunboy Castle, two miles west of the town and Waterfall House, the offical residence of the Royal Naval commodore of the Western Approaches squadron, anchored in Berehaven. There is also a wide range of shops, pubs, and restaurants, as well as a Catholic and Church of Ireland church, a nine hole golf course and a GAA pitch.
