Borris is a small town on the River Barrow in Carlow. It lies on the R702 regional road, close to the border with Kilkenny. Indeed, it is closer to Kilkenny City (26 km) than it is Carlow town (30km), both of which can be accessed by bus. Borris commands panormaic views of the neighbouring countryside with Mount Leinster and the Blackstairs Mountains to the east and the Barrow Valley to the west. It is also home to Borris House, the ancestral home of the MacMurrough Kavanagh dynasty who were the former Irish Kings of Leinster. The town also has one of the oldest golf courses in Ireland, as well as a 16-arch limestone viaduct, known as the 16 Bridges, which was built in 1860. It also has a mixed national school and vocational school, a Catholic church, seven pubs, three takeaways and three convenience stores.
