Ballinskelligs is a Gaeltacht village in the south-west of the Iveragh peninsula in Co Kerry. The village's name translates from Irish as 'place of the craggy rock'. The rocks referred to are the Skellig Islands, Skellig Michael and Little Skellig, an ancient monastic colony which lies off the coast from Ballinskelligs. The village is also the site of a beach, the ruins of Ballinskelligs Priory of Augustinian Canons Regular, and the remains of Ballinskelligs Castle. Other local amenities include Ballinskelligs Abbey, a hostel, B&Bs, the Cill Rialaig ARts Centre and a small selection of shops, pubs and restaurants. The nearest major town is Waterville, 13km away.
