Athenry is a town in Co Galway. It lies 25km east of Galway City and one of the attractions of the medieval town is its town wall, castle, priory and 13th century Anglo-Norman street plan. The town is also well known by virtue of the song "The Fields of Athenry". Athenry is served by the M6 motorway which links Galway City to Dublin. It also has its own railway station which lies on the Galway-Dublin line. Local amenities include St Mary's Church, seven primary schools, three secondary schools and a wide selection of pubs, shops and restaurants. There are a range of sports played in the area by St Mary's GAA club, Athenry FC and Athenry Athletics Club. There is also an 18 hole golf course called Athenry Golf Course which is located between Athenry and Oranmore in the townland of Palmerstown.
