County Westmeath is a landlocked midland county located in the most western part in the province of Leinster. Westmeath is a county of remarkable beauty and diversity. Stretching from Lough Ree in the west to Lough Sheelin in the northeast, it is home to Tullynally, one of the largest castles in Ireland. Its lakes and rivers and the Royal Canal make it a haven for inland water sport enthusiasts. County Westmeath boasts two substantial cathedral towns, Mullingar and Athlone, both commercial powerhouses of the midlands and both at least double their size since the Celtic Tiger. Both towns are considered to have strong industrial bases and are home to some big named companies including the Swedish software giant, Ericsson, and Pharmaceutical companies; Utah Medical Products and Mallinckrodt Medical from the US and Iralco Ltd from Germany. Other major towns thriving business centres in the county include Moate, Ballymore and Kinnegad. Mullingar is the administrative centre and county town of Westmeath and a major game and coarse angling centre. The half dozen lakes on the outskirts of Mullingar make for a fisherman's paradise. Referred to as the gateway to the west, lively Athlone is situated on the River Shannon and has an impressive Norman castle dating back to the year 1210. Athlone has great shops, where you can find a fine selection of handcrafted goods, from Irish linen to pottery. Athlone is also home to Mount Temple championship Golf course. Westmeath has many pretty towns and villages include, Delvin, the riverside Glassan and Rossmount. Westmeath also has its fair share of famous locals including, Michael O'Leary CEO of Ryanair, Joe Dolan, Marian Finucane and The Blizzards. There are many main road routes that run though County Westmeath. The main routes are the N6 Dublin to Galway, N4 Dublin to Sligo, the N55 to Cavan and the N62 to Roscrea and Thurles where it joins the M8, Cork to Dublin Motorway. Westmeath also has two rail routes that run through the county; one to Sligo via Mullingar and the other passes through Athlone en route to Galway. The nearest ferry port and airport to County Westmeath are both in County Dublin.
