Dublin 1 is north inner city and is separated from Dublin 2 by the river Liffey. The area is home to O'Connell Street, Henry Street, Jervis Street, the Irish Financial Services Centre (IFSC), the Docklands, Parnell Street, Busarus, Connolly Station, the Customs House and the north city quays. Within Dublin 1 is one of the City’s most famous streets, O’Connell Street, on which the famous Dublin spike was built. Officially titled ‘The Monument of Light’ Dublin it is referred to by local Dubliners as the Spike. Excellent shopping can be found on and round O’Connell Street on streets such as Henry Street which is home to the Iliac and Jervis street shopping centre. Most of Dublin city centre is within a short walk of anywhere in Dublin 1. However the area has great transport links. The immediate area has a number of multi-storey car-parks and is well served by public transport in the form of Dublin Bus, Irish Rail from Connelly Station and the Red Luas line. Landmarks in Dublin 1 include the GPO on O’Connell Street, which is the headquarters of An Post, the James Joyce Centre, St Mary’s Abbey, and the Dublin Gallery on Hugh Lane. Beyond the IFSC is the 02 which was formally know as the Point Theater. The 02 arena is Ireland’s newest music venues with many international stars playing there. Irelands first purpose built conference centre is currently under construction in the area, scheduled to open in September 2010. Opposite this is the Samuel Beckett Bridge which is currently under construction. It will link the Northside and Southside of the city over the River Liffey in the in 2010. The Mater Hospital, which has a staff of over 3,000 nurses, is located in Dublin 1. There is also a selection of educational institutions including DIT's at Bolton Street, Mountjoy Square, Cathal Brugha Street and Portland Row as well as the National College of Ireland IFSC, DCU and Clonliffe College.
