Ballinrobe, which is thought to be the oldest town in South Mayo and dates back to the 1300s, is bordered by numerous sites with archaeological, architectural, historical, and ecological interest. With miles of river fishing nearby and 60,000 acres of lough fishing, it is understandable why Ballinrobe is known as the lake angling capital of the west. The town also has a championship 18-hole golf course and has spring and summer horse racing events. The world-famous Connemara National Park, with its beautiful walks and breathtaking landscapes, provides for a fantastic day trip.
