County Sligo, known as ‘Yeats Country’ is situated in the west of Ireland in the province of Connaught and has archaeological heritage dating back 6,000 years.

Sligo City, although known locally as Sligo Town is county’s administrative centre. Sligo is the largest town in the north-west and boasts a very vibrant nightlife, with a great selection of nightclubs, live theatres and cultural events. Other thriving and growing towns in County Sligo include; Tubbercurry, Carney and the market town of Ballymote.

County Sligo is home to some remarkable scenery which inspired a wealth of William Butler Yeats poetry. Sligo’s rugged landscape is dominated by the majestic Benbulben, Knocknarea and the Ox mountains. Lakes are an important part of the county and are always a favourite with anglers and water sport enthusiasts, popular spots include Lough Gill, Lough Allen and Lough Gara in the south of the county. County Sligo also has a great coastline stretching 110 miles and has some of the best wind surfing beaches in the country, including Strandhill, Rosses Point, Mullaghmore, and Enniscrone – which are also popular for their golf courses.

The county has numerous points of interest and tourist destinations such as the; the megalithic cemetery of Carrowmore, Cnoc na Ri or Knocknarea, at its peak has series of cairns including Queen Maeve’s tomb and is the biggest Neolithic grave outside the Boyne Valley. Other sites include, Drumcliff Cemetery founded by St Columcille and also the resting place of Yeats’, Lissadell House, once home to Countess Markievicz and Coney Island.

There are many roads routes that the run through County Sligo. The main routes are the N17 which connects Sligo Town and Galway City, the N4 to Longford onto Dublin, the N15 to Donegal and the N16 which eventually links to the A4 to EnnisKillen. County Sligo has a number of railway stations situated on the Dublin to Sligo Town line. There is also an airport located near Sligo Town which has daily scheduled flights to Dublin and Manchester. Knock Airport in County Mayo is 40 miles from Sligo and has scheduled flights to the UK and Charter flights to Europe.
