11 Bed Country House 1381 m² / 14865 ft² For Sale€1,650,000
Set in about 110 acres (44.5 hectares) the estate is being offered for sale in its entirety to include the period mansion house, a fine cut stone quadrangular yard, walled garden, harbour and fertile farmlands fronting onto Lough Derg. Accommodation within the mansion house comprises in all about 14,873 square feet (1,381 square metres).
Available in the entire or in two smaller lots, comprising the mansion home on c. 40 acres and the remainder of the land, comprises about 70 acres.
A magical Victorian-Italianate mansion in the Classical style, built circa 1870 and marvellously positioned on the shores of Lough Derg. The principal house comprises two storeys over basement and is adorned by a balustraded roof parapet, includes tripartite and Venetian windows and, of course, has the distinctive and tall campanile tower, which extends to four storeys and provides the most wonderful panoramic views from the upper floors. Uninhabited for a time the property requires some repair but seems in relatively good structural order.
Sitting astride the regal River Shannon, Lough Derg is one of Ireland’s largest lakes and aptly named Ireland’s Pleasure Lake. Its 32,000 acres is an unrivalled asset for the residents of its three adjoining counties: Galway, North Tipperary and Clare. For the watersport enthusiast the facilities are world-class. Good sailing breezes provide good sailing conditions while the absence
of cross-winds and accessible moorings provide excellent waterskiing conditions. There are brown trout and coarse fishing on the lake. Slevoir enjoys splendid views over the lake and superb access from a private harbour, that is of sufficient size and depth to take a reasonable craft.
Located in county Tipperary, Ireland’s largest inland county, which is synonymous with horse breeding and equestrian pursuits, and indeed it is the home of many famous hunts and breeding establishments. Hunting locally is with the North Tipperary and Ormonde packs. Whilst its land ranks amongst the most productive in Ireland, Tipperary provides richly varied scenery from hills and mountains, to pasture plains and river valleys. Lough Derg is one of Europe’s most important wintering grounds for Teal, Widgeon, etc and it holds an all year round stock of Mallard.
Located a short drive from the attractive village of Terryglass a private avenue, complete with mature trees, leads past the cut-stone walls of the quadrangular stable yard to the front of the house, itself overlooking pleasant pasture. The mansion was lived in by the original family until the 1960s when it became a novitiate for a convent of nuns for about 40 years and has since been in private hands.
The Mansion House
Dating to circa 1870 the mansion house was built to the design of John McCurdy, who designed The Shelbourne Hotel of notable renown in Dublin’s city centre, for a Lieutenant Colonel J.F. Hickie. Enjoying a majestic position with slightly elevated views over Lough Derg the house is double fronted, with the approach front facing southeast and the lake front northwest. A entrance hall within the campanile tower leads into a marvelous Baronial Hall, which is of generous proportions and features an impressive carved timber staircase that is top-lit from a glazed atrium and leads to a fine gallery on the first floor.
While in the need of some repair the ornate and decorative ceiling plasterwork, that is such a feature of the principal hall and reception rooms, remains in near perfect condition and combined with generous proportions and fine tall windows make all the main rooms extremely pleasing. Positioned off the reception or Baronial hall the main entertaining rooms include a double drawing room, dining room with a fine curved bow and a study. The delightful first floor gallery leads to 7 main bedrooms, 5 comprising suites with bath or shower rooms, and twin passageways leading to 4 further bedrooms and 2 bathrooms and a shower room. The basement and upper tower rooms provide further potential accommodation.
