History

The house dates from 1906 and was originally built as a knitting school by the congested districts board. The school educated the local women in the art of knitting and provided much needed employment and income for the area. The house is known as “An Sean Monarcha” (The Old Factory). It is also known locally as Teach an Mhuilinn (house of the lake) due to its location on the shore of Loch an Mhuilinn. The house is full of character and has been home and inspiration to many artists over the years. The house was once home to the filmmaker Bob Quinn and his family. His films include Poitín, Caoineadh Airt Uí Laoghaire, and Atlantean. During his time in the house Bob set up the independent Cinegael, an Irish language cinema, showing Irish language films. The largest room in the house was used as the cinema. Bob’s son Robert Quinn grew up in the house and his award winning documentary ‘Cinegael Paradiso – Once upon a time in Connemara’ is based on him growing up in the house/Cinema. More recently the jewellery makers Jackie and Edd Kielty operated their jewellery making business from the house. The house is nestled on the edge of the pristine Loch an Mhuilinn. The lake and the surrounding scenery formed the inspiration for many of Charles Lamb’s paintings when he lived in the area from 1933 until his death in 1964. The lake was a favourite fishing spot for Charles Lamb and still contains numerous trout which can be seen jumping at the bottom of the garden most evenings.

Current Owner's comment

“I have loved every minute of living in this house and despite not getting to spend as much time there as I would like I have always considered it home. Every time I walk in and look around I am energised. Walking across the 100 year old floorboards and putting a hand on the thick solid cut stone walls has allowed all the stresses of a busy life to be drawn away. Sitting at the bottom of my garden, by the edge of my lake (well it seems like my lake!), watching the sun set makes me feel like luckiest person alive. Enjoying a pint (or two) of Guinness in the local has been made even more enjoyable knowing I am only a short stroll from home. I think if I had spent more time here I would have become an artist! Until I can find something similar in Australia I will just have to continue my life as an Engineer. Slan, slan go foill. “

Outdoor Lifestyle

The property would form the perfect base for someone who loves the outdoors. It literally has fishing, sailing, kayaking, swimming right on your back doorstep. For those who like sailing the lake would be suitable for small sailing boats and the local pier (Sruthan) is only 800m from the house. With the local pier (with yacht moorings) only a short walk away you could sail into Sruthan and be only a short stroll from home. There is also a new marina at the nearby Rossaveal Harbour suitable for year round mooring. The Arran island are only a short(approx. 18km) sail away. For those who like walking and hiking there is plenty of walking nearby and the Mamturks and 12 Bens can be seen from the house and back garden. For those keen golfers the Connemara Isles Golf Club is only 8km away and the the Connemara Championship Golf Links golf course is 70km away.

Location

An Cheathrú Rua or Carraroe is the main population of South Connemara and the principal town in the Connemara Gaeltacht. 40km from Galway City it is situated on a peninsula, with Casla Bay to the east and Greatman’s Bay to the west. The shoreline is dotted with beaches, the most famous of which is the Dóilín or the Coral Strand, made from an unusual coralline algae known as maerl. An Cheathrú Rua is a centre of cultural and social life with a strong emphasis on the Irish language and traditional crafts and activities. Few places in Ireland have a stronger everyday usage of the Irish language. NUIG has located some of its Irish language department here, while Radio na Gaeltachta and TG4 broadcast from nearby. The sea and traditional boats are central to life in An Cheathrú Rua and nearby. Casla Bay, Greatman’s Bay and Kilkieran Bay are home waters for many of the Galway Hookers, na Báid Mhóra, and their smaller cousins gleoiteogs and púcáns. These traditional sailing craft are raced up and down the Connemara coast at regattas held every weekend during the summer. The race from Sruthán Pier at the head of Casla Bay to Kinvara at the head of Galway Bay sees the waters off the shore at An Caorán Mór filled with sail every summer. Canvas currachs are also raced in intense sea races at regattas while wooden currachs found all along the shore are used for fishing, checking lobster pots and pleasure. An Cheatrú Rua hosts many of the services for the South Connemara region including pubs, shops, doctors, schools, a library, ambulance service, Garda station, garages, sporting facilities and clubs etc. Additional details for the town of Carraroe (An Ceathru Rua) can be found at the following website: http://www.carraroe.ie/

Sunset

Make sure to call around on a clear evening to witness the spectacular sunsets across the lake from the back garden. No two sunsets are the same and you will never tire off sitting out with a glass of wine (or a cup of tea) enjoying the sun setting over the lake.

Potential

Holiday Home /Investment: The house has the potential to command very good holiday rental income during the summer months due to it’s character, waterfront location and proximity to the village/pubs and local beaches. The house is located on the Wild Atlantic Way which will also help sell it as the great holiday rental. The house will tick all the boxes for those holiday makers looking for a character filled waterfront property and has the bonus of being within an easy walk of the local pubs/shops and restaurants.
