LOCAL INFORMATION
Terryglass is a village(Tír Dhá Ghlas, meaning "land of the two streams") is a village in North Tipperary. The village is located on the R493 regional road on the north-eastern shore of Lough Derg near where the River Shannon enters the Lough. In 1983 it received its highest accolade when it was voted Ireland's Tidiest village, and repeated this achievement in 1997. Indeed it has all the ingredients of excellence featuring a church, school, two restaurants, a community hall, and accommodation. The Quay where a major marina has been developed in recent years to cater for the cruiser craft on the River Shannon is an area of special beauty. From the quay you will see the unfurnished Norman Castle, Old Court. It has four towers attached to a rectangular centre. It is on private property and not accessible from the quay.
Lough Derg (Loch Deirgeirt in Irish) is the second largest lake (or Lough) in the Republic of Ireland (after Lough Corrib) and the third largest in Ireland overall (after Lough Neagh). It is a long, relatively narrow lake, with shores in counties North Tipperary, Galway, and Clare. The lake is the last of three on the River Shannon, with the other two, Lough Ree and Lough Allen lying further north. Some towns or villages on Lough Derg include Garrykennedy, Portumna, Killaloe & Ballina, Dromineer, Mountshannon and Terryglass.
At its deepest, the lake is 150 metres and covers and a squared area of 118km (45.5 sq miles). The lake is a popular place for leisure boating, sailing and fishing.
