Location

Dereen Lodge is not only situated on the renowned Costello & Fermoyle Fishery (salmon and sea trout), but is also a perfect base for fishing throughout Connemara and beyond. The Costello and Fermoyle Fishery is immortalised in the book “A Man May Fish” by Kingsmill Moore and Dereen Lodge is situated mid way up the Fishery, overlooking Fermoyle and Dereen Loughs. Loughs Corrib, Mask and Carra (Brown Trout) are all within an hours drive as are the Dawros/Kylemore, Ballnahinch, Inagh salmon and sea trout fisheries to name a few. Sea-fishing by charter boats is available out from Rossaveal and Spiddal harbours. Oughterard one of the nearest urban areas is a friendly and welcoming village, well catered for with a good range of shops, lively pubs, bank, hotels, post office, and restaurants which cater for the large numbers of visitors who come to take advantage of the walking, boating and other leisure activities for which this area is justly famous. Golf is available only 5 minutes from the property at Oughterard golf course. Oughterard has a diversity of spectacular scenery on the doorstep of Connemara with the tranquility and comfort of country living, yet less than 25 minutes drive to Galway City. The area is privileged to have two national schools with plans on the way to create one large national school and a highly regarded second level school. There are many sports clubs locally which include GAA, Soccer, Rugby, Badminton, Boxing a Gym and much more. Carraroe is a lovely coastal village and derives its name from An Cheathrú Rua, the red quarter or the russet rocky land. It is a popular holiday area for Irish speakers being in the heart of the Connemara Gaeltacht and also attracts many visitors who come to appreciate the wonderful scenery in the area. Several of the early Christian sites in the vicinity have been associated with the saints of Aran but the area appears to have been inhabited at an even earlier age by prehistoric people. There are many facilities including a church, schools, Restaurants, Pubs, Hotels, Chemist, Library, Council Offices, Industrial Estate, Credit Union, Post Office, Laundry, Church, Garages, Nursing Home, Medical Centre, 24 hr Ambulance Service and Golf Course. The primary and secondary schools in Carraroe are some of the largest outside of Galway city. NUIG (National University of Ireland - Galway) also has a branch of it's Irish department here, situated in the heart of the village (Aras Mhairtin Uf Chadhain). Here, courses are run for adults and third level students. NUIG also envisage spending 10 million Euro on development in Carraroe over the next ten years. There are also two well-established Irish summer colleges in Carraroe catering for up to 1000 students per month from all over the country during the summer months. Plans to develop a multi purpose leisure centre to include a 25 mtr swimming pool has been earmarked for the village. Some of Ireland's most beautiful unspoilt beaches can be found in Carraroe. Most noted would be 'Trá an Dóilin - the Coral Strand, very unique with it's fine coral. This beach is life guarded during the summer months. Within a short stroll from the property is Tishmeain Beach. The fishing port of Rossaveal is just five miles away, the second largest fishing port on the western seaboard. This is also being further upgraded at the moment. Rossaveal also houses the terminal for ferries to the Aran Islands.
