Clarinbridge
Clarinbridge is situated 8 miles south of Galway city on the main route from Galway to Limerick, at the mouth of the Clarin river and at the head of one of Galway Bay's most easterly inlets Dunbulcan Bay, from which come the world famous Clarinbridge oysters. Here exists the perfect combination of natural elements required to produce the perfect oyster.
The Irish version of the name is 'Droichead an Chlairin' meaning Bridge of Timber and from this the River Clairn derived its name. Historians tell us it was situated on the great highway known as 'Eiscir Riada' which ran from Dublin to Maree, just west of Clarinbridge. This highway ran through Kilcornan, Athenry and Athlone, using the continuous line of sandhills known as 'Eskers'. As a result of its location, it was traversed by many of the great armies of the past and was the scene of many blood battles. The surrounding countryside has many ruins of castles and churches all with their own story to tell of the saints and warriors who lived there.
The village was developed and greatly influenced by the local landlords, who owned Kilcornan Estate. The DeBurgo family ruled with an iron hand in the 1600's. The name changed in 1763 when Thomas Redington, a descendant of a 'Cromwellian' married Sara De Burgo (Burke) and came to live in Kilcornan. The Redingtons of Kilcornan, were responsible for the development and original design of the village which has at it's heart a walled village green in which
stands a monument to Thomas N. Redington. Clarinbridge is famous for it's sporting prowess and world renowned hospitality and our traditional village is home to a thriving active community. The village became a centre for the local community and held regular fairs and markets, which generated the need for three local pubs, which have changes little over many generations and add greatly to the historical feel of the village.
Galway City is a short trip and leaves you spoilt for choice; from shopping, the arts, lively social and night scene and is a University city, with University College Hospital and two private clinics in the Bon Secours and the Galway Clinic. Local amenities are another attraction Renville Sailing Club, Galway Bay Golf Club, schools, numerous sports clubs are also on your doorstep, as are such well-known hostelries as ‘Moran’s on the Weir’, Paddy Burkes in Clarinbridge.
