Location
At the heart of the Golf Resort is a 165 bedroom hotel, a leisure and spa complex and conference facilities. Carton boasts not just one but two great championship courses, complementary but completely different in character and designed by two of the biggest names in golf.
The O'Meara is a gorgeous parkland spread that makes splendid use of the estate's historic rolling hills, specimen trees and the River Rye. Feature holes that have already become famous include the 14th, 15th and 16th: a pair of threes wrapped around a heroic par five, criss-crossing the lazy loops of the river.
The Montgomerie is a unique inland links style creation featuring head high pot bunkers, contoured greens and tall fescue grasses that separate fast running fairways. It's a tribute to Colin Montgomerie's design that the course has been chosen to join a long list of classic Irish links courses in hosting the Nissan Irish Open in 2005. One of the most talked about new courses in the country, The Montgomerie was awarded -Best New Golf Course Design- in 2004 by Golf World magazine.
In 1837 the town of Maynooth was described as being "of one principal street, at one extremity of which is the avenue leading to Carton, the magnificent seat of the present Duke of Leinster, and at the other the Royal College of St. Patrick". It's a description that's still accurate today - only the Duke is missing - and as you take a stroll along the tree lined avenue from the estate into the centre of town, you might find it hard to believe that this small university town is just 22km from the centre of Dublin.
