Description

Baltrasna is imposing gracious country house set amidst manicured grounds and woodlands on the outskirts of the popular town of Ardee in Co Louth. The M1 motorway is a mere 6.5km giving easy access to both Dublin city and airport or to Belfast. Presented in excellent condition, Baltrasna offers a lifestyle in the Grand scale with formal reception rooms, high ceilings and a great sense of spaciousness and light. Dating from 1840, Baltrasna hosted a great ball in 1875 in the Ballroom/ Drawing Room to which the Great and Gentry of the locality were invited. More recently, the current owners decided to host another ball on the centenary of the original ball, which, from all accounts, was a most successful evening as well! Baltrasna lends itself as an entertaining house on a grand scale; the house comprises two storeys over garden level with about. 8,000 sq. of luxury accommodation. The exterior is Victorian style with large bay windows from the main reception rooms. The house is symmetrical in layout with an attractive pillar portico and Granite steps leading to the double front doors. The interior of the house is impressive with a grand staircase with overhead cupola. The ceilings, cornices and centre roses in the reception rooms are all ornate and highly decorative, they embellish the rooms and the high ceilings compliment the scale and proportion giving a great sense of space and light. The formal Drawing room doubles up as a Ballroom for special functions. The bedrooms are all of good size and proportions with superb views over the grounds. The garden level basement features a large billiard room, sauna and inviting kitchen with a spacious utility and washroom. The Grounds and Garden The house is approached along an attractive tree lined and stud railed tarmacadam avenue. It leads to a large gravelled forecourt area in front of and beside the house. There is also a small garage near the front. Manicured lawns and a large rose bed are attractively arranged amidst some colourful Rhododendrons, shrubs and mature trees in front of the house. There is a fine walled garden, mostly in lawn, but with a large vegetable/ fruit garden and greenhouse, which supplies fresh fruit and vegetables to the house. There used to be a grass tennis court in the walled garden, which is not now in use, but provides lots of shelter to the herbaceous borders. Beside this are a BBQ area and the site of the former swimming pool (also walled in). The old orchard still supplies a good quantity of apples and pears. Directly behind the house at the garden level are a log shed and coal shed. A short distance down the avenue is a wooded area with lawns and a stream and pond, where some wild fowl are to be found. The entire garden is sheltered by great stands of Beech and Oak trees as well as many flowering shrubs and a variety of unusual tree species.
