REFNO:73658. The Royal Hotel an elegant Grade II listed building with its unique gold dome has been a place of welcome to travellers since the early part of the nineteenth century. Situated in the heart of the thriving town of Hexham the hotel dominates the street of Priestpopple. Built in 1820 the original coaching house was known as the 'New' or 'Low Grey Bull' eventually to become 'The Royal Hotel' in around 1870. The new owners took over in early 2008 with a vision to restore The Royal Hotel to its former glory. with the introduction of an exclusive Thai restaurant the Thai Royal Orchid. Hexham itself (population 11 300) is a prominent market town that dates back to 674 AD. Many historic buildings still survive - among them the 12th Century Abbey with its original 7th Century Saxon crypt (built from stone taken from nearby Hadrian's Wall) and the Old Gaol the oldest gaol in England now the site of the Border History Museum and the Hexham Tourist Information Centre.
