County Limerick is located in the south west of Ireland in the province of Munster.

Limerick City which lies on the banks of the River Shannon and Abbey is Ireland’s third largest city and is the county’s administrative centre. The City dates from a 9th century Viking settlement and has a City Charter older than that of London. Limerick is home to some notable architecture such as King John's Castle and St Mary's Cathedral, one of the oldest in Ireland at 800 years; much of the city now is of Georgian architecture. Limerick is a regional centre for shopping, dining and entertainment. Moving outside the city the county is dotted with many picturesque towns and villages, such as Castleconnell on the banks of the Shannon, Newcastle West, Doon, Hospital and Adare, with its old world thatched cottages and medieval churches.

Limerick is a great sporting county and is widely regarded to be the Irish home of Munster Rugby. The love of the game is mainly focused around Limerick city, which boasts many of Ireland's most celebrated All-Ireland League teams; Garryowen, Shannon, Old Crescent, Young Munster are among the most prominent. Limerick's Thomond Park is the home of the Munster Rugby team. The city also boasts a National 50m Olympic-standard swimming pool, at The University of Limerick Sports Arena. UL offers a wide range of college programmes up to Doctorate and Post Doctorate levels and is most famous for its outstanding recreational and sporting facilities which include; the largest indoor sports hall in the country, cardio-vascular fitness suites and a health fitness clinic. The county also nurtures the game of hurling and its teams have are no strangers to the All Ireland champions games.

Limerick also has its fair share of famous locals including, The Cranberries, The Frames, Terry Wogan, Eamon Dunphy, author Edna O'Brien, and the late actor Richard Harris.

There are a number of road routes that run through County Limerick. The main routes are; N7 linking Limerick City with Dublin and Cork City, N21 to Tralee, the N18 to Shannon and Galway City and the N20 to Cork. Limerick has three operational railway lines passing through it; the Ballybrophy line to Nenagh and Roscrea in County Tipperary, the Ennis line through County Clare and the Limerick Junction line which connects Limerick City to the Cork-Dublin line. Shannon Airport which is located in County Clare is approximately 20 minutes drive from Limerick City. The airport serves many international and transatlantic flight routes. Kerry Airport and Cork Airport are also within easy reach of the County.
