LOCATION
The quarry site, at Sheeaun is located approximately 2.5 kilometres to the southwest of the town of Gort. It lies on the west side of the N18 (Gort to Ennis) National Primary Road and the M18 Gort to Crusheen motorway.
THE PROPERTY
The property consists of a limestone quarry. The current quarry extraction area is located in the western half of the landholding. The southern part of the operational area contains the entrance and related ancillary facilities including weighbridge(s), wheelwash, etc. This area is within the registered Section 261 quarry area. The eastern part of the landholding, covering an area of 9.9 Ha., was recently granted planning permission by Galway County Council for extraction of rock to a depth of 25 meters above Ordnance Datum (maOD) (PA Ref. No. 09/415). Extraction of rock is not currently taking place in this area. The quarry has been worked to a depth of c. 25 m AOD.
LIMESTONE RESERVES
A preliminary assessment indicates that there is c.2.5 million tonnes of extractable limestone reserves in the Eastern Quarry Extension Area.
PLANNING STATUS
The original planning permission for the quarry was granted by Galway Co. Council in 1994 (Plan. Ref. No. 70238). The quarry was registered with Galway Co. Council in accordance with the requirements of Section 261 of the Planning & Development Act, 2000 (Quarry Ref. No. Q46). Modified conditions were imposed on the operation of the quarry by Galway Co. Council in 2007. Galway Co. Council grated permission for an eastern extension to the quarry (Plan Ref. No. 09/415). The duration of this permission is limited to 5 years, June 2015.
