The Century Bar is a listed building on a corner site of Roden Place opposite St Patrick’s Cathedral. Built in 1902 by local Builder, Terence McDonald – whose initials form the centrepiece of the bar – to celebrate the beginning of the 20th Century, this is a romantic building of rare Art Nouveau architecture.
This property has many features of architectural interest, including the original bar counter and hand-carved bar backdrop, and the delightful neo-Tudor turret with curved sashes and glass that surveys the street scene below. This impressive building is in fine order and is well maintained.
The Century was reputedly a watch-tower for forces during the Irish Civil War (1922 - 1923), on account of the strategic vista it commands from the neo-Tudor turret, showing Dundalk Port and the route up to the town centre.
