LOCATION
The site, at Ford-of-Fine, Naul is located approximately 1 km to the west of Naul village, Co. Dublin. It is situated in Co. Meath, on the Meath / Dublin county boundary which is marked by the Delvin River (which forms the southern boundary of the site). The site entrance lies approximately 400m to the north of the R122 Regional Road which runs from Balbriggan to the west, through the village of Naul
and south to Finglas on the northern fringes of Dublin City.
DESCRIPTION
The property consists of:
1. An exhausted sand and gravel pit (c.4.6 hectares), in part being currently restored to beneficial agricultural use.
2. Existing agricultural lands (c. 23.2 hectares) located to the east of the existing
permitted operational area as described above with the potential to extract the in-situ sand and gravel deposits subject to the necessary planning permission.
SAND & GRAVEL RESERVES
There are no extractable sand & gravel reserves remaining in the existing sand & gravel pit (c. 4.6 hectares). A geophysical survey and boreholes have been carried out over the agricultural lands. Based on this information a preliminary assessment indicates the lands contain c. 3.3 million tonnes of extractable sand & gravel, subject to planning permission.
PLANNING STATUS
The existing sand & gravel pit commenced operations before 1st October 1964.
It was registered with Meath Co. Council in accordance with the requirements of Section 261 of the Planning & Development Act 2000 (Ref. No. QY/28)
Under Section 261, Meath Co. Council imposed 23 no. conditions on the operations of the pit. Two of these conditions were appealed to An Bord Pleanala (Pl.03.QC.2082).
Planning Permission has been granted by Meath Co. Council in two occasions in 2007 and 2009 for extension of the sand & gravel pit into the agricultural lands, but on both occasions these decisions were overturned by An Bord Pleanala who issued refusals.
DIRECTIONS
Travelling from Dublin city, head northward through Ballyboughal and on to the Naul. Continue on through the village pass Killians public house, turn left onto the R112 pass the local GAA grounds. After half a mile take the first right turn on to the L10703, the entrance to the Sand and Garvel pit is on the right hand side.
